Role: Director

Job Description:
We are looking for directors with experience of running or being a director of a social enterprise who can work with us to grow and develop a new Social Enterprise that has been set up in Coventry to re-cycle, repair and re-purpose donated bikes for offer and sale to the local community.

Purpose of the Role:
The Director will help provide effective leadership, governance and strategic direction for the Coventry Bike Project CIC.

The Director will work collectively with fellow Directors to ensure that the CIC operates effectively, remains financially sustainable and achieves its social and community objectives.

The role will support the development of a sustainable community bike project that repairs, recycles and redistributes bicycles, provides volunteering and skills development opportunities, and improves access to affordable and sustainable transport for people in Coventry

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Development

• Contribute to the development and implementation of the CIC’s business plan and strategic objectives.
• Identify opportunities for the project to grow its social impact and financial sustainability.
• Help develop partnerships with community organisations, local authorities, cycling organisations, funders and other relevant agencies.
• Contribute ideas for new projects, services and income-generating opportunities.
• Review progress against agreed objectives and help identify areas for improvement

Community and Social Impact

• Ensure that the CIC remains focused on its community benefit and social objectives.
• Help ensure the project reaches people who may experience financial, social or economic disadvantage.
• Support opportunities for local people to volunteer, develop practical skills and gain experience.
• Help demonstrate and communicate the social and environmental impact of the project.

Governance and Leadership

• Contribute to the effective governance of Coventry Bike Project CIC.
• Help ensure the CIC complies with its legal, regulatory and constitutional responsibilities.
• Ensure decisions are made in the best interests of the CIC and its community purpose.
• Help develop and review organisational policies and procedures.

Financial Oversight

• Take collective responsibility for ensuring the CIC is financially well managed.
• Review budgets, financial reports and cash-flow information.
• Help ensure funding is used appropriately and in accordance with funding agreements.
• Support the development of sustainable income streams.
• Help identify and manage financial risks.

Risk Management and Compliance

• Ensure appropriate systems are in place to identify and manage organisational risks.
• Contribute to health and safety, safeguarding, data protection and other relevant governance arrangements.
• Ensure Directors understand their responsibilities and act collectively in accordance with the CIC’s governing documents.
• Declare and appropriately manage any conflicts of interest.

Fundraising and Partnerships

• Support applications for grants, contracts and other sources of funding where appropriate.
• Help build relationships with potential funders and partners.
• Represent Coventry Bike Project CIC positively within the local community.
• Identify opportunities for collaboration with other voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations.

Person Specification
Essential
• Commitment to the aims and community benefit objectives of Coventry Bike Project CIC.
• An interest in community development, social enterprise, cycling, sustainability or improving opportunities for local people.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a Board.
• Ability to contribute constructively to discussions and decision-making.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and act appropriately as a director.
• Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Desirable
Experience or knowledge in one or more of the following would be valuable:
• Board or committee experience.
• voluntary sector management
• Financial management or accountancy.
• Fundraising and grant applications
• Business development.
• Community engagement.
• Human resources.
• Marketing and communications.
• Cycling, bicycle repair or sustainable transport
• Partnership/ Community development.
Applicants do not need to have experience in all areas

Time Commitment
The expected commitment is approximately 4–6 hours per month, although this may vary depending on the needs of the organisation.
This will normally include:
• Attendance at Board meetings.
• Reading relevant papers before meetings.
• Participation in strategic discussions.
• Occasional involvement in project development, fundraising or partnership activities.
Directors may occasionally be asked to provide additional support for specific projects or organisational priorities
